Carl Lewis: An Athletic Legend who Transcended Sport Boundaries
Carl Lewis is a name that will forever be etched in the history of athletics. This American sprinter and distance runner is one of the greatest sporting icons of all time. During his career, he won a total of nine Olympic gold medals and became a symbol of speed, elegance and an unrelenting aspiration to win.
But his achievements go beyond the confines of the sporting arena - Carl Lewis is an inspiration to people around the world who strive to push their limits and achieve incredible goals.
The Beginnings of a Great Career
Carl Lewis was born on July 1, 1961 in Birmingham, Alabama, but grew up in Willingboro Township, New Jersey. From a young age, he was surrounded by sports - his parents owned an athletic club where Carl gained his first experience. Young Lewis had exceptional physical attributes from the start and his talent was evident at an early age.
During high school, he was primarily involved in the long jump, but later discovered his potential in sprint events as well. Carl Lewis studied at the University of Houston, where he began to develop his talents to a world-class level under the tutelage of coach Tom Tellez. Even during his studies, it was clear that Lewis had an extraordinary career ahead of him.
Olympic Dominance
Carl Lewis first shone at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he literally dominated the athletic competitions. He won four gold medals - in the 100m sprint, 200m, long jump and 4x100m relay. This achievement was reminiscent of Jesse Owens' legendary performance at the 1936 Olympics and instantly made him a global star.
Lewis's dominance continued at subsequent Olympic Games. In Seoul 1988, he defended his gold in the long jump and added a victory in the 100m sprint, despite the controversial disqualification of his opponent Ben Johnson for doping. Carl Lewis has shown that his achievements are not just the result of hard work, but also of unwavering character and sheer competitiveness.
He went on to collect medals at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics, with his performance in the long jump making history. He became one of the few athletes to win the same event at four consecutive Olympic Games.
Athletic Records
During his career he set records in the 100m and 4x100m and 4x200m relays. His indoor long jump record has not been broken since 1984, and his 65 consecutive long jump victories over 10 years are among the longest unbeaten streaks in the history of the sport.
A Symbol of Style and Elegance
What set Carl Lewis apart from other athletes of his time was his unique combination of speed, power and elegance. On the track, he was not only fast, but also incredibly elegant. His running style was considered perfect and inspired generations of sprinters who tried to emulate his technique.
Lewis was also known for his professionalism and his emphasis on pure sport. At a time when the world of athletics was plagued by doping scandals, Carl Lewis remained a symbol of sporting integrity. For many fans and athletes, he was living proof that hard work and talent could achieve the same results as illegal doping.

Life after his Sporting Career
After retiring from his active career in 1997, Carl Lewis began to pursue various projects outside of athletics. He has worked as an actor, entrepreneur and motivational speaker. His passion for sport and healthy living led him to spread awareness about the importance of exercise and self-discipline.
Carl Lewis is also known for his involvement in charity projects. He is actively involved in humanitarian programs and initiatives aimed at the education and development of youth and underprivileged communities. He has also become a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme. He lives in his native New Jersey, where he coaches the young sports stars of his hometown.

He has shown people around the world that hard work, determination and belief in one's own abilities can lead to incredible success. Carl Lewis has become not only a legend of sport, but also an inspiration to all those who strive for excellence in their lives. Deep Friendship
Carl Lewis and Sri Chinmoy were brought together in 1983 by mutual friend Narada Michael Walden, producer, composer and multiple Grammy Award winner. The relationship that has developed between them over the years is not easy to categorize. It brings to mind Percy Cerutty and Herb Elliott or Nakamura and Seko: mentor and athlete. There is no doubt that Sri Chinmoy provided Carl Lewis with tremendous inner inspiration and spiritual support - before the 200m final at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and on other important occasions, the two meditated together. On the other hand, Carl Lewis gave Sri Chinmoy practical advice on sprinting, as Sri Chinmoy spent his early life in India, where, in addition to his spiritual disciplines, he was also a regular athlete, and for many years was a champion in the decathlon and 100 metres sprint (11.70 s). In America, he ran 22 marathons and participated in many veteran athletic competitions.
"In sprinting, we need to have a centre of gravity over our feet. We need to stand up straight, then lift up on our toes, send our hips forward and just run. We need to get our hips over our feet. We do that by shooting them in. Then, of course, the upper body will follow. We need the arms to come forward to the face, and then the arms come back just a little bit. Those are the mechanical concepts of sprinting, the simplest things." - Carl Lewis
"Outwardly, you have already done something extremely great for humanity. You've created something immortal, and the results inspire millions of people... But there is also Carl Lewis - the man within. And there is also an inner consciousness, which we call the love of the heart for humanity and the heart's cry for the betterment of the world."- Sri Chinmoy
